There is one more place people have been raving about, “Hattie B’s Hot Chicken”. Located on 112 19th Avenue S, let’s find out why the fried bird on their menu is making a name for itself; some are even saying it puts music city into your mouth!
Owners Nick Bishop Sr., and his son Nick Jr., found a way to make taste buds 2-Step in Midtown. The Bishop palettes are bursting with flavor, innovation, and Great Grandma’s inspiration. A family secret recipe developed over the past several years has taken college students and tourists by storm. It began as a “special” menu item at one of their other restaurants, and the got the recipe down to an art! Next thing you know, people from all ethnicities and backgrounds are enjoying this piping hot chicken with ways to get it “Hot” or “Not” which allow people to be as safe or daring as possible. Here are the options: Southern, Medium, Hot and Damn Hot. “The Southern” works for the elderly, the kids, and those who just want to enjoy good, honest, flavorful fried chicken. But with each level of intensity, the stakes get raised! Ending with “Damn Hot!” on the spectrum, may require the handy roll of paper towels located on every table to catch the trail of tears! However, the kick in this chicken is not done without is own spin of flavor as well. Many times flavor is sacrificed on the altar of “hotness”, but not here, because with every bite, the flavor of juicy chicken, crispy crust, and secret spices jump out and dance with your taste buds.
Chicken cooked to perfection, moist, tender, and hot. The presentation is quite breath-taking, towering pieces of bread, chicken, and slices of ice cold crunchy pickle literally stacked to the ceiling! Huge portions of bird, fresh homemade sides: a rich and hearty potato salad, a zesty pimento mac n’ cheese with a southwestern kick, home-cooked southern greens, and tons more! Take your pic of either fresh-squeezed lemonade, fresh-brewed ice tea, or ice-cold local/domestic beers so satiate your own style and taste. Jackalope, a local brewery, is developing a unique beer that will work as the perfect pairing to the wings and for watching the games! Yazoo, another local brewery is also available on tap inside. And who could forget the desserts? Homemade Banana Pudding, Peace Cobbler, floats, ice cream, the list just continues… Grandma Hattie knew how to get maximum flavor into each and every facet of her cooking, and the Bishop family has continued to pack their legendary knock out recipes into each and every order!
You can always catch the Bishop family running the restaurant! They are just one of those families that are hard-working, loves food, and most of all LOVES their customers. “How’s the food?”, says Nick Bishop Sr. as he sits down on the porch fellowshipping with local customers. As they were telling him how unique the food was, he seemed to just be a “natural” at talking and maintaining their interest. He and his son were found taking pictures, socializing, cleaning up, running the store and doing the little things that have huge impacts on their customers. “I opened this place, and on the last Saturday I took out the trash. You gotta learn how to work with your mind, heart, soul, and hands”, said Nick Bishop, Sr. “Thanks again, I will definitely be back soon!”- Customer. “Alright!” says, Nick Jr., as he makes his rounds getting to know the people who love his food. It was quite evident that the hard work has truly traveled though the bloodline of these 3rd generation Restauranteers which have included management in Morrison’s Cafe, Ruby Tuesday’s, and several other culinary ventures including catering, Bishop’s Meat-and-3, which is well-known in Cool Springs, TN. As the Bishop family sees the success of this latest venture, Nick Jr. says, “Hopefully this is a template for great things to come!”
